Annual GMDSS Radio
Survey

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) developed the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), which consists of safety procedures, equipment, and communication protocols. The system is required by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The main requirements are as follows:

Radio Equipment: All ships under SOLAS regulations are required to have radio equipment that meets GMDSS standards, including VHF and MF/HF radios, EPIRBs, SARTs, and AIS.

Certification and Surveys: To comply with SOLAS regulations, ships are required to have initial and annual GMDSS radio surveys. Only qualified radio surveyors are permitted to conduct these surveys.

Performance Standards: The radio equipment is required to comply with IMO performance standards as well as ITU Radio Regulations.

Maintenance and Inspections: To guarantee that radio equipment stays operational and meets SOLAS standards, it must be maintained and inspected regularly.

Chapter IV of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which deals with radio communications, details the requirements for GMDSS radio surveys.
